Let’s dive in!
Defining Your Wedding Vision
Before you dive head first into the nitty-gritty logistics, it’s important to start with the big picture. What overall feeling or experience do you want your wedding to convey? Is it a formal black-tie affair or a relaxed backyard celebration? Do you envision an indoor ceremony or an outdoor oasis?
Answering questions like these will help you identify your top priorities, whether that’s amazing food, an epic dance party, or a meaningful ceremony. It will also ensure your venue aligns with your dream aesthetic, allowing for maximum customization.
At UNION, our flexible event spaces are designed to bring your vision to life, no matter your style. From our light-filled main floors to our moody speakeasy and rooftop photo op, we offer a variety of backdrops to set the tone for your celebration.

Setting a Wedding Budget
Once you’ve established your wedding vision, it’s time to get practical and set a realistic budget. This crucial step will inform every other decision, from your venue and catering to your attire and entertainment.
Common wedding expense categories include:
- Venue
- Catering & bar
- Photography/videography
- Floral & decor
- Attire
- Entertainment
- Planning & coordination
- Rentals
As you allocate your budget, be sure to prioritize the elements that matter most to you as a couple. An open-vendor venue like UNION can provide more flexibility, allowing you to splurge where it counts and save on other aspects.
Choosing the Right Wedding Venue in Kansas City
Your wedding venue is often the first major decision you’ll make after hiring a planner, and it will set the tone for your entire celebration. When evaluating potential venues, consider factors like guest capacity, layout flexibility, included rentals/services, and vendor policies.
At UNION, our customizable event spaces are designed to adapt to your vision. With three floors of indoor event space – including a Speakeasy – we can accommodate weddings of all sizes and styles. Plus, our open-vendor policy means you have the freedom to bring in your own catering, entertainment, and other vendors.

Building Your Wedding Planning Timeline
Careful planning is key to keeping your wedding on track. A well-crafted timeline will ensure you book your vendors, finalize details, and enjoy the process without the stress.
Typical planning stages include:
- 12-15 months before: Secure your venue and vendors
- 9-12 months before: Finalize your guest list and design elements
- 6-9 months before: Order attire, stationery, and rentals
- 3-6 months before: Manage RSVPs and finalize logistics
- Final month: Confirm all vendor details and create a day-of timeline
At UNION, our dedicated event team will work closely with you to coordinate your vendor timelines and venue logistics, keeping your planning on schedule.
Designing the Wedding Atmosphere
With the practical details covered, it’s time to focus on the aesthetic. From your floral arrangements and lighting to your tabletop design and ceremony backdrop, every element will contribute to the overall atmosphere.
Our flexible event spaces provide a beautiful blank canvas, allowing you to transform the area to match your unique vision. Whether you envision a modern, minimalist look or a lush, romantic aesthetic, our team can offer guidance and inspiration to make your dream a reality.
Choosing Your Wedding Vendor Team in Kansas City

Collaboration is key, so it’s important to find vendors who work well together. At UNION, our open-vendor policy means you have the freedom to choose the professionals you connect with most, without any restrictions.

- Sophisticated Fall Wedding | Charlotte and Jack’s intimate fall wedding at UNION in Kansas City was a heartfelt and thoughtfully designed celebration that blended modern elegance with personal meaning. Our Kansas City-based 828 Planning team helped the couple create a warm and romantic atmosphere inside UNION’s industrial space using lush greenery, drapery, chandeliers, and an earthy palette of mauve, maroon, mocha, olive, and sage. With the venue’s 24-hour rental, they enjoyed meaningful first looks and a relaxed start to the day before hosting guests for an elevated plated dinner and a candlelit reception. Unique touches like mauve macarons in place of a traditional cake, vibrant dance floor lighting, and a sparkler exit on UNION’s rooftop overlooking the Kansas City skyline made the celebration feel both intimate and unforgettable.

Photo: Paige Reed - Moody Mid-Century Wedding |Bethany and Colby’s wedding at UNION was a vibrant, personality-filled celebration that perfectly blended bold design, meaningful details, and high-energy fun. Inspired by a moody mid-century aesthetic, the couple chose a striking color palette of dark green, black, copper, rust, and cream, which paired beautifully with the venue’s industrial brick backdrop. With guidance from 828 Planning, their vision came to life through thoughtful DIY elements and curated décor, including a market light greenery wall, disco ball accents, and hand-painted table numbers. Personal touches like a floating vinyl record escort display and a custom record guest book reflected their shared love of music and history together since college. The night ended with an unforgettable afterparty in The Goldfinch Room — UNION’s private speakeasy — complete with late-night mashed potatoes, making their wedding a perfect example of how creativity, intentional design, and personal storytelling can transform a celebration into an unforgettable experience.

Photo: Mon Photography - An Elegant Wedding Full of Intention | Anne and Brayden’s wedding at UNION was a heartfelt celebration that beautifully reflected their love story and connection to Kansas City. Having met in law school while living in St. Louis, the couple chose UNION for its exposed brick, rustic charm, and warm atmosphere that perfectly matched their simple, organic vision. With support from 828 Planning, their day featured natural, understated décor with lush greenery, eucalyptus runners, soft candlelight, and market lights woven with foliage to create a romantic glow. One of the most meaningful moments came when they slipped away to the rooftop to exchange private vows after signing their marriage license. The celebration continued with playful, memorable touches, including a wedding scavenger hunt, taco bar dinner, dancing, and a lively photo booth.
